Adam Bushell & Bela Emerson play graphic scores by NMB composers
June 14th sees a very special concert featuring cellist Bela Emerson and vibraphonist/percussionist Adam Bushell interpreting a set of graphic scores by NMB composers. These scores limit or completely eschew the use of traditional Western musical notation, allowing a wide scope for improvisation on the part of the performers. Although still unusual in the concert repertoire, graphic scoring was used extensively by some of the most influential composers of the post-WWII era, including Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Cornelius Cardew and George Crumb, as well as by such revolutionary jazz composers as Leo Wadada Smith and Anthony Braxton. We’re excited – and intrigued – to see what results this experiment brings about!
