Jim started composing music for performance at the age of 52, from 2001. His Guitar Duet was played in 2005, and the piano Sonata for Four Hands as well as the piano duet Love, Sorrow and Joy (from earlier work) in 2006. His works Humoresque (a piano improvisation), Love Potion and I Anoint My Flesh (both by poet Wole Soyinka, for piano and mezzo soprano) and the political semi-improvisation The Asylum Seeker (for piano, female and male speaking voices) are to be performed on March 2nd 2007. His work Xena, for bassoon and oboe will be played in April. He has also written a piece for mezzo soprano, flute, Bb clarinet, tuba, piano and (a quarter tone below) violin and viola from another Wole Soyinka poem A Cobweb's Touch In The Dark.
